"Entrance to Birkenau"

When I studied abroad in Italy, I made a trip to Poland and Hungary for spring break. There we were able to take a tour of Auschwitz concentration camp, and the women's camp, Birkenau. What I witnessed on those tours has changed my life forever. I wanted to create a piece that represented the looming horror that lay behind the entrance gate when prisoners were sent into the camps.

"La Bella Vita"

In this second Italian-themed vase, I decided that I wanted to wrap the scene all the way around, instead of leaving the backside blank. I used the same procedure as the last one, although I was able to try some new colors here.

"Italian Life"

This earthware vase took about a month to make, from forming the shape, to drawing the design on clay, carving, and painting. After firing it once with "sig" coloring, I added a stain to the cracks to bring out the detail, and fired it again to create this look.
